Jill Hermsen is the Program Director for Mizzou ADVANCE, a grant that aims to enhance faculty diversity in MU's science, technology, engineering, and math departments. The grant is funded by NSF with matching University of Missouri (MU) funds and involves developing a mentoring program, an outreach initiative, and interactive theatre performances as well as conducting research using MU and national data.

Jill has a doctoral degree from MU's Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis program with an emphasis in higher education administration. Her primary research interests include issues related to higher education employment. In her dissertation, she examined employee work-life, identity, engagement, and job satisfaction issues in a research university. Along with guest lecturing on higher education topics, she has presented research at regional, national, and international conferences. Jill earned a Master of Education degree from Harvard University, where she specialized in higher education administration, planning, and social policy. She holds a bachelor's degree in Sociology is from Briar Cliff College.

Jill brings extensive private- and public-sector experience to Mizzou ADVANCE. She worked as a management consultant with the Strategic Change practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting where she helped numerous government agencies and business organizations implement strategic and technological changes as well as employee development initiatives. Her clients included NASA, FAA, Avon, American Home Products, and Symbol Technologies.

Prior to joining Mizzou ADVANCE, she served as the Coordinator of International Student Services at MU. In that role, she helped international students and key campus constituents understand the legal and cultural aspects of studying overseas. In addition, she designed and implemented educational and professional development programs such as new international student orientation for students and cross-cultural communication workshops for university staff members. Her international interests stem in part from experience gained while living in Paris and Copenhagen.

While at MU, Jill has served as an advisor to several student organizations and is a co-facilitator of the Women's Leadership Freshman Interest Group. She has also served on a number of professional association committees and has trained new international student and scholar advisors in professional association workshops. For her contributions, she was chosen for honorary membership in MU's Mortar Board society (for scholarship, leadership, and service), as a finalist for MU's Mike Deaver Award (for fostering good relations with students), and the Harold Josephson Award from the Association of International Education Administrators (for emerging leadership in international education).

Jill's Mizzou ADVANCE responsibilities include managing day-to-day project activities as well as collaborating with faculty and administrators across campus to implement grant initiatives, coordinating professional development programs, serving as a liaison among project sub-teams, and working with the other researchers to collect and analyze data on gender equity indicators.
