The Luverne Walton ScholarshipThe Luverne Walton Scholarship in Women Studies was created in the fall of 1996 to recognize the contributions of Professor Walton to the establishment of the Women Studies Program (now the Women's and Gender Studies Department) at MU and to gender equity on the MU campus. In keeping with Luverne Walton's contributions to MU, the scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate students who have demonstrated a commitment to the study of women and to gender equity. The first Luverne Walton scholarship was awarded for the 1999-2000 academic year. While substantial funds have been raised, fundraising efforts are ongoing at this time. Scholarship ApplicationsThe Women's and Gender Studies Department is now calling for applications for the Luverne Walton Scholarship. We will award the scholarship to an outstanding undergraduate student who has demonstrated a commitment to the study of women's/gender issues and to gender equity. For the 2011-2012 academic year we will award one $2,500 scholarship ($1,250 per semester). The scholarship may be renewable for an additional year in some circumstances. You need not be a Women's and Gender Studies major or minor to apply. Luverne Walton was a distinguished faculty member at MU who helped to form the original Women Studies Program and advocated for improved conditions for women faculty and students on our campus. The scholarship is designed to identify students who exemplify the special talents and commitments of Professor Walton. Students are encouraged to apply for the Luverne Walton Scholarship at the end of their sophomore or junior year. The scholarship will be awarded the following academic year. Deadline to apply for 2011-2012 scholarship is Friday, April 1, 2011. Full details concerning the application process, and a list of required materials, are included on the application form.
