Course Description

Course Description: As visibility of the transgender community increases and transgender rights are debated on a national level more than ever before, it is important to explore various issues pertaining to the transgender community. This course will focus on issues and topics related to transgender studies, ranging from the often untold and erased history of the transgender community, to current forms of activism and resistance. This course will delve into the complexities of trans femininities, masculinities, as well as identities and experiences beyond the binary. We will focus on how different intersections of social life, such as race, class, and ability, impact experiences of violence and oppression within the transgender community. Students should leave this course understanding current debates about transgender topics, be able to deconstruct common narratives of transgender experiences, and have the tools to navigate the complex gender structure of our evolving social world.
