Course Description

Using art as the primary collecting subject, this course explores how collecting culture intersects with ideas of identity and consumption. We look at women and queer collectors in Europe and the United States since the early modern period, as well as groups or individuals who are challenging the white, male, heteronormative narrative of art history that is usually presented by museums in their public collections. Students examine how the practice of collecting art was and is used to express identity, and how possession and consumption can be used to inform, perform, and challenge societal norms.
